Flat shoes have often been seen as a fashion no-no by trend-setters and celebrities alike. An example? Victoria Beckham famously claimed she never goes to the gym because she can’t cope with the thought of having to wear flatties. But – shock, horror – even Mrs B’s been seen out in a pair of flat pumps recently.
A cupboard full of high heels may be all well and good, but every girl needs at least one pair of flat shoes – and not just because of the comfort factor. In fact – whisper it! – the latest crop of fabulous flatties can look über-glamorous too, making them the perfect alternative footwear for parties, shopping trips and work.
Ballet pumps are still very much in vogue, as seen on the Chanel catwalk and worn by the likes of Katie Holmes, Kate Moss and tabloid regular Amy Winehouse. They’re great for nights out and shopping trips, but be warned: lack of support in the soles means your feet may start to hurt if you’re pounding the pavements for more than a couple of hours.
If you just want a basic, go-with-anything shoe, buy a pair of ballet pumps in black – or for a more eye-catching evening look, try New Look for their gorgeous red satin pumps with its cute bow (£15; www.newlook.co.uk).
Other fabulous flats that are all the rage right now include this season’s must-have gladiator sandals: we’re currently obsessed with Moda in Pelle’s ridiculously comfortable Octopus pair (£50; www.modainpelle.com). And, of course, there’s always the good old reliable baseball pump, as worn by Agyness Deyn.
But if you really can’t bear to go out on the town without your heels, it’s still a good idea to invest in a pair of Red Foot Revolution’s after-party shoes (£25; www.redfootrevolution.co.uk). These unique folding pumps come in a variety of colours and designs: just pop a pair into your handbag then slip them on when your feet are in need of some TLC. Genius!

It is not just us who suffer from these wardrobe malfunctions though; even the celebrities have been affected.

Just as the office was about to get all Judge-Judy on the shoe manufacturers a message popped into our inbox from those lovely people at RedfootRevolutions about their After Party Shoes.
I am going to let you into a secret now; these shoes really are a revolution! The basic premise is that they fold up and fit easily inside your bag. Then after a hectic day in the office or a busy night strutting on the dance floor you slip on these comfy little shoes and protect your tootsies from any more suffering.
70% of us ladies end up going home early from a night out because our shoes are hurting too much
The need for After Party Shoes is even more evident when looking at research the company commissioned into how many women have had to cut short their night out due to the pain caused by their shoes. No less than 70% of women asked, said they had been forced home by their rogue heels.
It is not just us mere mortals who suffer from dodgy shoes though; many a celebrity style icon has been tripped up, quite literally by inappropriate footwear.
has got a pair and was papped switching into them outside a top London nightclub.
A poor innocent model at the 2006 Paris Fashion Week fell over not once, but twice as a result of her high heels, and who can forget the time the queen of mobile phone throwing and celebrity tantrums, Naomi Campbell, went head over heels on the catwalk during the Vivienne Westwood exhibition?
Putting the falling-over models to one side, the other great thing about the After Party Shoes is that female office workers will no longer have to put up with snide comments from male co-workers when they arrive at the office in their trainers.
Not sure about you but I could quite happily assault the next guy who dares to comment on the fact I have chosen to travel to the office in trainers rather than the razor blade high heels.

They make your figure look great as they hide your tummy and nip in your waist. I have quite a few and always wear then on my ‘feeling fat’ days. Men love them too as they are very feminine. I love the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s style and would wear anything from these times.
Be yourself, express yourself, be as glamorous as you can and never care what others think.

One of the hottest new products to hit the shoe market, at only €35 a pair, the Redfoot APS shoes are flying off the shelves.
Dubbed the ‘commuter shoe,’ because they’re so easy to carry in the handbag and the ‘After Party Shoe’ because they’re so handy for when the high heels come off, the pairs are now available to buy in Ireland rather than just online.
Currently stocked by only two stores in the country — The Shoehorn in Skerries and Bienvenue in Mullingar — the shoes have proved popular with women of all ages.
Spokesperson for the Redfoot brand Kerry Chessman said: “We’re actually in advanced negotiations with Arnotts at the moment so they should be on sale there in the next few months.”
A huge hit with celebs including Corrie’s Michelle, better known as Kym Ryder and her former Hearsay bandmate Suzanne Shaw, these shoes are a must-have for any fashionista fed up with the price of beauty being pain.
